State Senators Steve Wilson and Terry Johnson paid tribute to Deborah Ashenhurst, the outgoing Director of the Ohio Department of Veterans Services (ODVS), as she steps into retirement.

Senator Wilson praised Ashenhurst's contributions, stating, "The kindness and care Director Ashenhurst has shown to our veterans is unparalleled. Her ability to lead this agency and to make sure Ohio's military veterans have the services they need will be missed. I'm proud to honor her dedication to Ohio and congratulate her on her retirement."

Senator Johnson added his recognition: "We recognize Director Ashenhurst not only for her remarkable achievements but also for the legacy she leaves behind; a standard of service that will inspire others for years to come. She is a friend, colleague, and someone I can really call my Army buddy."

Appointed by Governor DeWine in 2019, Ashenhurst brought extensive military experience to her role at ODVS. She served over 37 years in both the U.S. Army and Ohio National Guard. In 2011, she was appointed Adjutant General of the State of Ohio—a gubernatorial-level cabinet position—serving until January 2015 before moving on as a special assistant at the National Guard Bureau in Washington, D.C.

Both senators serve as chairman and vice-chairman respectively on the Ohio Senate's Armed Services, Veterans Affairs and Public Safety Committee.
