State Representative Justin Pizzulli from Scioto County has introduced new legislation aimed at alleviating financial pressures on school districts, particularly those in rural areas. The proposed bill addresses the rising costs associated with the College Credit Plus (CCP) program that have increased since the pandemic. Pizzulli is working on this initiative alongside State Representative Adam Bird from New Richmond.
The bill seeks to align rates for online CCP classes with the second-tier rate for CCP classes taken at high schools, as online courses are currently billed at a higher rate per credit hour. It also encourages textbook cost-sharing between colleges and high schools and allows students to use free, open-source materials. Additionally, it promotes local enrollment by encouraging students to take CCP courses available at their high schools.
“This bill offers practical, fair, and financially responsible solutions to ensure CCP remains a valuable resource for Ohio’s students and school districts,” said Pizzulli. He emphasized that “Appalachian schools shouldn’t be at a financial disadvantage compared to urban districts. This bill levels the playing field, keeping resources where they’re needed most.”
The legislation is pending assignment of a bill number and committee review.
