State Senator Sandra O'Brien has introduced new legislation aimed at reducing property tax bills for Ohio residents. The bill comes in response to recent increases in property valuations that have resulted in higher tax burdens for homeowners.

Ohio ranked 11th highest nationwide for effective property tax rates in 2022, with a rate of nearly 1.3%. This ranking does not reflect the additional increases seen in 2023 and 2024. "Ohioans have some of the largest property tax bills in the nation," O'Brien stated, emphasizing a voter mandate to address this issue.

Senate Bill 66 proposes changes to the calculation of a school district's 20-mill floor, incorporating most voted levies and all inside millage, including permanent improvement levies. If enacted, it is projected to save Ohio property owners approximately $300 million over three years. The bill will now be referred to a Senate committee for further consideration.
