State Representative Justin Pizzulli has announced plans to introduce legislation that would designate February 4th as John Rankin Day in Ohio. The proposed bill also includes a provision for erecting a statue of Rankin on the grounds of the Ohio Statehouse.

John Rankin, a reverend and early abolitionist, played a significant role in the Underground Railroad. His home in Ripley, Ohio, served as a key location for over 2,000 enslaved people seeking freedom between 1829 and 1865.

"By recognizing John Rankin Day and erecting a statue in his honor, we can honor his legacy of bravery and compassion," stated Pizzulli. "Rankin stood up for what he believed in, against all odds, and will be remembered as one of Ohio’s greatest abolitionists."

Pizzulli is co-sponsoring this legislation with State Representative Tex Fischer. The bill is currently awaiting assignment of a number and committee review.
