State Senator Shane Wilkin (R-Hillsboro) has announced an investment exceeding $21.8 million into the 17th Senate District for economic development projects along local waterfronts. The investment is part of a larger initiative that will see over $203 million awarded for projects throughout Appalachian Ohio. These projects aim to stimulate new tourism and recreational activities, revitalize historic waterfront downtowns, among other objectives.

"The Buckeye State's success hinges on the success of Appalachia. Southern Ohio has so much to offer our residents and tourists, including beautiful waterways that give us all something to enjoy," said Wilkin. "I'm excited to see these funds come to deserving communities that will use them to grow their economies, support local businesses, and provide more opportunities for all Ohioans."

The funding allocated to the 17th Senate District will be distributed among several projects:

- Gallipolis Riverfront and Streetscape Improvements (Gallia County): $9,044,400

- Proctorville Lock 27 Redevelopment (Lawrence County): $5,206,800

- Burlington Riverfront Park Redevelopment (Lawrence County): $1,003,660

- South Point Park Improvements (Lawrence County): $1,274,700

- Ironton Riverfront Improvements and Ro-Na Theatre (Lawrence County): $5,277,310

This financial support stems from the Wonderful Waterfronts Initiative. This initiative is a component of the Appalachian Community Grant Program which is investing $500 million into Appalachian Ohio. Senator Wilkin had previously supported funding this program during his tenure as Representative Wilkin in House Bill 377 of the last General Assembly.
