State Senator Shane Wilkin (R-Hillsboro) has expressed his sorrow over the passing of former State Representative Brigid Kelly. In a heartfelt statement, Wilkin recalled his fond memories of Kelly, highlighting their mutual respect despite political differences.

"I am very sad to learn of the passing of my dear friend and colleague, Brigid Kelly," Wilkin said. "As I think back on my relationship with Brigid, I cannot help but smile. We most definitely had different views and ideas on what was best for Ohio and our constituents,  but we never had a crossword for each other."

Wilkin went on to describe how they maintained their friendship even when they disagreed on issues. He humorously recounted an instance where he told a group of people that he did not like Representative Kelly because she was smart, well-prepared, articulate, and politically opposed to him. The comment was met with laughter from both Kelly and the group.

Wilkin also shared that he kept in touch with Kelly after her departure from the legislature. He admired her positive outlook even as she battled illness.

"Brigid would always ask about my girls and was reluctant to talk about her illness," Wilkin said. "If she did, it was positive, and how she was focused and looking to the future."

In closing his statement, Wilkin extended his condolences to Kelly's family.

"My deepest condolences to your husband, your family, and your loved ones," he said. "To lose you has to be devastating."

Wilkin expressed hope that Kelly's family would find comfort in remembering her accomplishments and the joyful memories they shared.

"For me," Wilkin concluded, "I will remember you for everything I have mentioned above, see you smiling, maybe even snickering, in 'Kelly Green' and working for your people."
