COLUMBUS - The Ohio Senate passed Senate Bill 130 today, sponsored by Senator Steve Wilson (R-Maineville), which introduces several updates to the Ohio Notary Law.

"A goal of mine throughout this General Assembly has been to modernize the operations of government across the State of Ohio," said Wilson. "It is crucial that we improve upon Ohio's business services and update outdated and burdensome provisions."

The legislation aims to enable the Secretary of State's Business Services Division to function more effectively and efficiently. Key updates in the bill include:

- Clerks of Courts and Deputy Registrars are now required to accept electronically notarized documents.

- The Secretary of State has the authority to revoke a notary's commission if they fail to cooperate with an investigation.

- It specifies that a notary commission is not considered an occupational or professional license under state occupational regulation laws.

- Requires notaries to take their oath of office in person.

- Notaries charging excessive fees will no longer be classified as committing a "prohibited act."

Senate Bill 130 now proceeds to the Ohio House for consideration.
