The House Government Oversight Committee has passed House Bill 272, a legislation that grants local governments the authority to expand concealed carry access. State Rep. Justin Pizzulli, the bill's sponsor, announced the committee's decision.

If the bill becomes law, local governments will have the option to allow concealed carry in courtrooms or buildings that contain courtrooms, under specific conditions. The building must not be a designated courthouse but rather a building where a courtroom is located. Additionally, the building must fall under the jurisdiction of the relevant local government. Weapons will only be allowed inside when court is not in session and the building is not being used for court purposes. Furthermore, the local government must have enacted an ordinance that permits citizens to carry weapons in the building for non-court related purposes.

Pizzulli expressed his support for the legislation, stating, "This legislation empowers local control and strengthens Ohio's concealed carry law." He also thanked the committee for their thorough consideration of the bill.

Currently, Ohioans are prohibited from carrying concealed weapons in courtrooms or buildings that house courtrooms, regardless of whether court is in session or the building is being used as a courthouse. House Bill 272 now awaits a vote on the House floor.

If passed, this legislation would provide local governments with the flexibility to determine their own concealed carry policies within their jurisdictions. It acknowledges the importance of local control and allows communities to tailor their regulations to suit their specific needs.

While some individuals may have concerns about the potential risks associated with allowing concealed carry in court-related buildings, proponents argue that responsible gun owners should have the right to protect themselves. The bill strikes a balance by ensuring that weapons are only permitted when court is not in session and the building is being used for non-court purposes.

The passage of House Bill 272 represents a significant step towards expanding concealed carry access in Ohio. It reflects a commitment to empowering local governments and recognizing their ability to make decisions that best serve their communities. As the bill progresses to the House floor, its supporters hope it will continue to garner bipartisan support and ultimately become law.
