The U.S. Census Bureau reports that the older adult population in the country continues to increase, while younger groups are declining. Between 2020 and 2024, the population aged 65 and above rose 13%, and the number of people under 18 dropped 1.7%. The nation’s older adult population has grown substantially over the last century, from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million by 2024.
A 2021 report estimates that about half in this age demographic—nearly 28 million people—could require long-term care or support, with over a third potentially needing nursing home care in the future.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
