State Representative Justin Pizzulli announced on Mar. 12 that four elementary schools in Adams and Scioto Counties have been recognized as 2026 Science of Reading Champions by Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce.
The recognition highlights the commitment of these schools to using the Science of Reading approach, which aims to improve student engagement and literacy outcomes. The honored schools from the 90th House District are North Adams Elementary School in Seaman, Peebles Elementary School in Peebles, West Union Elementary School in West Union, and Sciotoville Elementary Academy in Portsmouth.
“Literacy education is a critical component of the health and wellbeing of our children,” said Justin Pizzulli. “I am proud of these schools in our communities for the work they are doing to set students up for success!”
The Science of Reading method teaches students how to read by focusing on sounding out and understanding words. In total, 109 schools across Ohio received the 2026 Governor’s Science of Reading Champions Award.
Pizzulli has prioritized defending life, safeguarding second amendment rights, and advancing economic prosperity in Southern Ohio, according to the official site. He serves as state representative for the 90th Ohio House District, which covers areas including Scioto and Adams counties as well as parts of Brown County according to his official biography. His role involves representing these communities at the state government level according to his official biography.
The recognition reflects ongoing efforts within local districts to support literacy development among young learners. Observers may expect continued focus on reading initiatives as more schools adopt evidence-based teaching methods.
