U.S. Census Bureau estimates indicate the older adult population in the United States is rising, while younger age groups are declining. Between 2020 and 2024, people age 65 and older increased by 13%, while the number of individuals under age 18 dropped by 1.7%. The nation’s older population has grown sharply since 1920, expanding from 4.9 million to more than 61 million by 2024.
A 2021 analysis estimates that almost half of adults in this age group—about 28 million people—may require long-term services and supports. The analysis also predicts over one-third could need care in a nursing home.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
