U.S. Census Bureau estimates indicate that the older adult population in the U.S. is increasing as the number of younger people falls. From 2020 to 2024, Americans age 65 and over grew by 13%, while those under age 18 dropped by 1.7%. Over the past century, the country’s older adult demographic has expanded significantly, from 4.9 million in 1920 to over 61 million in 2024.

A 2021 analysis found that almost half of Americans in this age category, or about 28 million, may need long-term care services and supports. The report also estimated that more than a third could ultimately require nursing facility care.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an education organization for the industry. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
